Separation–Individuation refers to the influential psychoanalytic theory developed by Margaret S. Mahler, describing how infants gradually develop a separate sense of self and psychological autonomy during the first years of life. The concept is most fully presented in Mahler’s collaborative work The Psychological Birth of the Human Infant (Mahler, Pine & Bergman, 1975) and in later scholarly collections such as Separation–Individuation: Essays in Honor of Margaret S. Mahler (International Universities Press, 1971).
