Gdańsk is a historic city located on the Gdańsk Bay, near the mouth of the Vistula River into the Baltic Sea. For centuries it was the richest city of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.
The beginnings of Gdańsk go back to the time of Mieszko I, who controlled this part of Pomerania around 967–972. On the site of today’s Długi Targ, at the fork where the Motława River flows into the Martwa Wisła, he established a fortified settlement with a port.
