Parsa — known to the ancient Persians by this name and to the Greeks as Persepolis — was the ceremonial capital and spiritual center of the Achaemenid Empire, one of the largest empires of the ancient world. Founded by Darius I around 515 BCE and expanded by his successors, especially Xerxes I, the complex was built on a vast, artificially leveled stone terrace at the foot of the Kuh‑e Rahmat mountain. It consisted of monumental palaces, audience halls, gateways, and treasuries arranged with extraordinary architectural precision.
