Banganarti on the Nile by Bogdan Żurawski is a comprehensive archaeological monograph that presents the results of many years of Polish excavations at the medieval Nubian site of Banganarti, located on an island in the Middle Nile, and it reads as a sweeping narrative of how a seemingly modest settlement revealed itself to be one of the most important Christian pilgrimage centers in the kingdom of Makuria. Żurawski reconstructs the history of the site through architecture, inscriptions, wall paintings, and material culture, showing how the central sanctuary—known as the Upper Church—functioned as a place of healing, intercession, and royal devotion, visited by kings, nobles, and ordinary believers who left behind hundreds of Greek and Old Nubian inscriptions asking Saint Raphael for protection.
