"The Careless Technology" explores the relationship between technological development in the Third World nations and the ecological strains that "progress" creates. It challenges the idea that developing countries can or should be overhauled by the wealthier nations. Each of the fifty case studies contained in this volume describes the ecological results of international development programs; each shows that government-supported projects are helping to destroy the natural resources of two-thirds of the Earth's land. Too often science and technology are used to conquer our world rather than used to help all people live better within it. This book records a long roster of well-documented ecological mistakes, and in doing so it raises profound scientific, social, and ethical issues. All of the papers and discussions in this volume are from the proceedings of a conference convened and sponsored by The Conservation Foundation and the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems, Washington University; they have been edited and updated for inclusion here.
